Guest mstraxs Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Hi all Been away for a few weeks at work and came home to my wife and the following explanation.... The power steering went completely for about 5 days. The steering wheel was very hard to turn especially when at rest. So I am home now and jumped into the car (Galaxy Tdi 1998) a couple of days ago and of course it is all ok now! She says it seemed to go all of a sudden. Then come back very light 5 days later. In fact it was so light she was frightened to drive it. I can't say I can notice a difference it how light it feels but It is now making a noise if you turn it on full lock that wasn't there before. Has anyone come across this problem and if so any guesses as to the cause. Is the power steering pump going? Just to note the steering fluid is still full and the belt still there! Cheers all Mark Quote
Dave-G Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Is the bottom engine splashguard/cover in place? Quote
MrT Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 I saw on FixAFord that water on the power drive belt can cause this problem and earlier models had a problem with the low pressure pipe which caused knocking when cornering. Quote
seatkid Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 There was a post from someone who reported the bracket holding the steering pump had come adrift (bottom bolt sheared).... check the tension on the belt, sometimes the automatic tensioner breaks... Quote
